The Cuban Cigar Shortage: What Edmonton Smokers Should Know

If you've walked into a cigar shop lately — ours included — and found the Cuban shelves thinner than you remember, you're not imagining it. Cuban cigars are in a genuine, worldwide shortage, and our distributor's latest update confirms it isn't easing yet. Here's what's going on, what it means for the humidor at Vape N' Cigar Xone, and how to make sure you don't miss out on the cigars you actually want.

What's Happening in Cuba

The short version: Cuba is producing and exporting far fewer cigars than the world wants to buy. Industry figures put Cuban cigar exports at roughly half their 2018 level, and several problems are stacked on top of each other. The island's energy and fuel crisis has hit everything from farm transport in Pinar del Río — the region that grows most of Cuba's cigar tobacco — to getting finished cigars out of the country; air freight has been severely disrupted, and some stock moved by sea has suffered in transit. Tobacco regions are still recovering from hurricane damage, and at the same time global demand has kept climbing, with Habanos posting record sales revenue on fewer cigars. The result is predictable: less supply, higher prices, and long gaps between shipments.

What Our Distributor Is Telling Retailers

Our Cuban cigars come through Canada's official import channel, and the distributor's current stock update is blunt: the situation in Cuba has not changed, shortages continue, and what does arrive comes in small shipments. Retailers are held to strict box limits on limited items — order more than your allocation and the order simply isn't processed. That's why no shop in Canada, however big, can just fill its humidor: everyone is working from the same small, irregular deliveries, and when a shipment lands, the popular lines are spoken for quickly.

What This Means in Our Humidor

We keep 17 Cuban lines in the humidor at West Edmonton Mall, and we order at every opportunity the distributor opens. Practically, though, shortage conditions mean three things. First, availability rotates: a line like a Montecristo or Romeo y Julieta vitola that's here today may skip the next shipment entirely. Second, timing matters more than it used to — the best moment to buy your favourite is when you see it, not next month. Third, prices across the industry have been drifting upward with every distributor increase, and there's no sign of that reversing while supply stays tight. What hasn't changed: everything in our humidor is genuine, officially imported stock, stored at proper humidity from the day it arrives.

A Word About Counterfeits

Scarcity has a dark side: fake Cuban cigars are flooding the global market, right down to counterfeit bands by the hundreds of thousands. A "Cohiba" from an unofficial source at a too-good price is, in this market, very likely not a Cohiba. Buying from an established Canadian retailer who sources through the official importer is the simplest protection there is — it's exactly why we can say with confidence what's in our humidor is real.

How Not to Miss Out

  • Call ahead. Ring the store at (587) 855-1419 before you drive in and we'll tell you honestly what's in the humidor that day.
  • Buy when you see it. In a shortage, "I'll grab it next time" often means waiting a full shipment cycle — or longer.
  • Store what you buy. If you pick up a few extra of a favourite, keep them at 65–70% humidity so they're perfect when you smoke them — our guide to storing cigars in Alberta's dry air covers it, and humidors start at $29.99.
  • Stay open to alternatives. Ask us what's smoking well right now — another Cuban line while yours is away, or a premium non-Cuban in a similar strength. Shortages have introduced a lot of smokers to cigars they now prefer.
  • New to Cubans? Start with our beginner's buying guide so your first purchase is the right one.

The Bottom Line

Nobody in the industry can give a date for when Cuban supply returns to normal — our distributor's position is simply that the situation hasn't changed. Until it does, our approach stays the same: order everything we're allocated, keep the humidor honest and properly stored, and tell you straight what we have and what we don't. Visit us at 8882 170 Street NW, Unit B103, Entrance 24, West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton — Mon–Sat 10 AM–9 PM, Sun 11 AM–6 PM. Cigars are in-store only, and you must be 18 or older to purchase.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Cuban cigar shortage end?
There's no announced timeline. Our distributor's latest update says the situation in Cuba has not changed, and industry watchers don't expect supply to normalise quickly. We restock whenever shipments land.

Are your Cuban cigars authentic?
Yes. Every Cuban cigar in our humidor comes through Canada's official import channel — no grey-market or unverified stock. That's especially worth checking in a shortage, when counterfeits are common.

Why can't you just order more?
The distributor caps how many boxes of limited lines each retailer can order per shipment, and orders above the limit aren't processed. Every Canadian shop is working under the same limits.

Can I buy Cuban cigars online or have them shipped?
We sell cigars in-store only, so every cigar stays in humidor condition until it's in your hand. You can call (587) 855-1419 to check what's in stock before visiting.
